Every year millions of Americans contract the flu and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized due to complications. Each year it costs the U.S. $10.4 billion while also driving higher patient volumes to hospitals across the country.
Most flu cases could be prevented if patients received their annual flu shot, but many people are unaware of the benefits or availability of the vaccination. One way to boost education and thus, vaccination rates is to reach out to patients and identify who has not yet been inoculated and who may need help. This flu season we introduced a program that does just that and then triages those patients to hospital staff who can help educate and set up appointments for the patients.
This program can be customized to different patient populations and can noticeably improve vaccination rates throughout the community. Once patients are vaccinated their chances of getting the flu significantly decrease, which translates to fewer hospital admissions and a healthier community.
